Almost four years ago, I visited the University of Michigan (my absolute dream school) with my parents and friends. When applying to college, a huge factor in my decision was finding a place that was familiar with “Gluten-Free” that had many Gluten-Free options.
Within a day of being in Ann Arbor, I had Gluten-Free pancakes for breakfast at Savas, a Gluten-Free Zingermans sandwhich, and a late night Cheesy Bread from Pizza House! I knew Michigan was the place for me.

I am now a Junior at the University of Michigan, and I can honestly say one of my favorite parts about living in Ann Arbor is the amount of Gluten-Free options I have every day. From a delicious avocado toast at Wilma’s, to an afternoon Gluten-Free wrap at Amers Deli, to Gluten-Free noodles at No Thai, or even some tacos at Isalita—Ann Arbor has it all. And I really mean it! There have been some late nights where I have gotten home from the library and wanted a treat—Pizza house late night Cheesy Bread and a Gluten-Free milkshake IZ a great way to end a study day.
^ A few of the MANY Gluten-Free places that I love here.
During most of meals I go to with my friends, they love the Gluten-Free options so much that they order the food for themselves too! It is safe to say the food is great in AA, but the people are even better! Every restaurant experience I have had in Ann Arbor has only been positive and delicious—I feel safe eating the food here, and know it is Gluten-Free. This is always super comforting when being far from home!
I encourage you all to ALWAYS pick a place that is comfortable for you… whether it is a sleepaway camp, a college, a summer program, or even a restaurant with a friend. Never go somewhere where you doubt what you are eating—it is not worth the reaction or the stress! I have learned this many times.
